The bride and groom plant a young coconut tree in a special place (often on a 'motu').

The tree signifies the couples union and Cook Islanders believe that the tree's health reflects the strength of the couple's marriage.

Cook Islands - Marriage Requirements

Beach Wedding, Aitutaki, Cook Islands Honeymoon in the Cook Islands The Cook Islands are a wonderful wedding destination. Plan a beach wedding and invite family and friends.

Cook Island marriages are internationally recognized and are legally binding worldwide. The following is general information for getting married in the Cook Islands. It is recommended that you check with the marriage-licensing bureau in your state or province for local requirements regarding marriages.

  • The Legal age of consent to marry in the Cook Islands is 20 years, otherwise written approval by parents is required.
  • Application for Marriage License must be made in person to the Registrar of Marriages in the Cook Islands at Avarua at least 3 working days prior to the marriage.
  • Your passport and birth certificate will be required when filling out the "Notice of  Intended Marriage" at the Registrars Office.
  • If divorced a copy of the Decree Absolute will be required.
  • All documents must be in English.

Aitutaki Special Ceremonies for Wedding Couples

wedding customs in the Cook Islands
A local custom in Aititaki for weddings is for couples, immediately after the wedding, whether on the beach or in a church, to board an open truck with their wedding party. The truck is followed by a truck complete with a drumming team.

The procession drives through each of the 8 villages on Aitutaki while the drumming announces that they have just been married.

People from around the island come out onto the road to wish them well in their new life.

The procession drives along the road to collects gifts that friends and family present to the newlywed couple.
